CEMETERY COORDINATOR
St. George Catholic Church in suburban Baton Rouge, Louisiana, seeks a full-time Director of Music and Liturgy to direct the liturgical prayer of our vibrant parish of 3,400 registered families. With an average parishioner age of 37, St. George serves as a flagship parish in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. We worship together in a beautiful church designed to carefully unite traditional and modern architectural and artistic appointments.
The Director of Music and Liturgy oversees all aspects of our music and liturgy program, most notably serving as director and choral conductor for 2 parish choirs and leading over 500 liturgical ministers. The director is assisted by five part-time musicians who serve as organists/pianists and cantors.
The ideal candidate will have a deep knowledge and understanding of Catholic music and liturgy. 5 years of experience in parish ministry and an undergraduate degree in music or sacred/liturgical music is required. A graduate degree in Sacred Music, Liturgical Music, or Liturgical Studies is preferred. The successful candidate will be a skilled organist/pianist and choral conductor. Reports to: Pastor and Director of Administration
Major Duties:
Ensure cantors, organists/pianists, choir and/or ensemble are provided for 5 weekend masses. Serving as cantor, organist/pianist, or director for 3 of the 5 weekend masses.
Serve as primary director of adult choir for the 9:30am Mass and the youth choir for monthly family mass. As well as plan and direct seasonal choir programs throughout the year.
Recruit, develop, and rehearse choirs, ensembles, cantors and instrumentalists.
Provide music for Holy Day liturgies, Funerals, Confirmation, Reconciliation services, and other special parish liturgies throughout the year.
Oversee the selection of liturgical music for all parish liturgies and prepare worship aids as needed.
Assist in planning of all funerals including consultation with families regarding music selections, liturgical ministers, and funeral logistics.
Assist in liturgy planning, music selection, and musician scheduling for weddings held at St. George.
Book extra instrumentalists and ensembles for special occasions as needed and arrange music.
Oversee maintenance and tuning of musical instruments in the church and work with sound technicians in maintaining church sound equipment.
Primary instruments: 3 manual Allen Renaissance organ and Yamaha C7X piano.
Work with church staff to oversee church Audio/Visual ministry, using appropriate technology to support our liturgies through digital worship aids.
Maintain an organized library of the parish music.
Ensure opportunities for spiritual formation and music skill training for all music ministers.
Participate in continuing education in the areas of liturgy, music, and Catholic liturgical documents.
Parish Staff
Supervise part-time music staff.
Collaborate with parish staff through bi-weekly staff meetings and meetings for planning, evaluation, and preparing the parish calendar.
Participate in annual staff retreats.
Participate in staff continuing education.
Work cooperatively with parish staff and maintain Christian attitude/behavior in dealings with all clergy, staff, parishioners, and the community in general as a representative of St. George.
Prepare and oversee liturgy and music budgets.
Support the activities of other staff members and collaborate with the parish staff in providing parish-wide events.
Serve as a professional resource in areas of responsibility.
Plan weekly liturgies and liturgies for Holy Days, special feasts and other celebrations as needed. This includes preparation of appropriate liturgical scripts and Prayers of the Faithful.
Recruit, train, and schedule all liturgical ministers.
Work in collaboration with the church décor committee to provide an appropriate liturgical environment.
Collaborate with the Liturgy Commission to provide support and resources for coordinators of the various liturgical ministries.
Collaborate with parish staff to support rites of initiation throughout the year.
Collaborate with Sacristans to maintain appropriate Sacristy inventories.
Professional
Minimum undergraduate degree in music or sacred/liturgical music. Graduate degree in Sacred Music, Liturgical Music, or Liturgical Studies is preferred.
Minimum 5 year of experience in parish ministry required.
Demonstrate mastery of necessary musical skills: vocal/choral pedagogy, organ and piano accompaniment, sight-reading, and choral conducting.
Understanding use of PC, Mac, and iPad is preferred. Understanding of sound technologies is also preferred.
Participate in planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of all programs related to major areas of responsibility.
Cooperate in an annual evaluation of role, accomplishments, and future goals.
Participate in continuing education in liturgy and music by attending appropriate seminars provided by the diocese and by participating in national conventions and/or workshops.
