"The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of immeasurable value, greater that that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred melody united to words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy."
-Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy. Second Vatican Council, 1963
"God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each uman person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises."
-Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship. USCCB, 2007.
Upholding music as a "necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy," St. George Catholic Church maintains a vibrant Music Ministry. This ministry is comprised of various ensembles that aim to support and enhance our community's sung prayer. It is this sung prayer that is used as an instrument for our community's full, conscious, and active partcipiation in our liturgies.
Our primary choir is truly all those gathered at Mass. This means that all who gather to worship God are called to lift our voices together in song. Additionally, those with particular musical gifts are called to lead and enhance this sung prayer. Do you have a musical gift to share with our community? If so, consider joining the St. George Choir.
The St. George Choir sings for the 9:30 Mass on Sundays, major holy days and holidays, as well as presenting special sung liturgies throughout the year. Weekly rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm from September through mid-May. Reading music is not a must, but a true willingness to learn with a deisre to praise God in song with the ability to carry a tune.
